I have featured the works of two authors on this website whose works are directly related to the efforts of this site. I want to feature the work of another writer whose works are not directly related, but related nevertheless. Donna Thorpe’s literary work is in the field of poetry.
I met her recently at the Valley Church of Christ in Sun City. In our brief visit, I learned she was a published poet. The more I learned about her and her poetry, the more interested I became. I sent her a few questions via email and she responded by writing:
- I began writing poetry actually fairly early in life. In grammar school, the sixth grade, or thereabouts, we began studying various poets. I immediately loved reading their work. It was so fulfilling and exciting emotionally. We studied about Shakespeare also. I really enjoyed reading the “love” or “romantic” poems. I guess a lot of young girls are drawn to that type of genre. I began writing poems of my own, in about 8th grade. I was very shy, and did not think they were very good. Some of my classmates read them, and encouraged me to write more. I wish I would have saved them. In 1988, I began submitting my poetry into various anthologies. I received four Editor’s Choice Awards, and was published in a compilation of poetry in a book entitled, The Colors of Life, in 2003 (International Library of Poetry).
- Poetry to me now, is quite different than what I believed it to be when I was first exposed to it as a young girl. I believe poetry is the expression of your heart, and your vessel which you can use to honor God and praise Him to the height which He deserves. Poetry emanates from the deepest part of our spiritual being. My target audience is hopefully everyone. I realize that not everyone is a fan of poetry, however, it is my hope that the inspiration that is derived from a particular poem, may touch the heart of the reader in their own way. It is also my prayer, that Christians will relate to the poems and praise to our God, and find a personal relationship to the poems in the book.
- My new book of poems is entitled, On Our Way To Heaven. The poems in this book will be related to our Christian walk, and the blessings and challenges we face as we walk the narrow path which leads us to our eternal reward. I am also writing messages within this book about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The main thread that will be woven throughout this work, will be our living and sharing of our faith, and bringing others to Christ, so they may share in the ultimate reward of eternal life.
